Dave Specter: a 41 year veteran of the Chicago blues scene, just released his 14th album, Live at SPACE on Delmark Records.
He appears on over 50 albums as a guitarist, bandleader and/or producer including compilation recordings with Carlos Santana, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Eric Clapton and Mike Bloomfield.
Downbeat magazine calls Dave “one of the few top-tier guitarists” and he’s performed in 19 countries with recent shows in Spain, France, Belgium and Switzerland.
Dave’s unique guitar style combines elements of Chicago blues with influences ranging from Magic Sam, Buddy Guy and Otis Rush to the Texas/West Coast styles of T-Bone Walker, Gatemouth Brown and the Vaughan brothers.

A deep calling led them both to the Blues, and the Blues brought Lil' Red (Jennifer Milligan) and Pascal Fouquet together in 2010. Not to mention, this week’s Friday night performance features one of the best Cubop bands around! ***Cubop*** (a combination of "Cuba" and "bebop") is an electrifying subgenre of Afro-Cuban jazz that developed in New York City during the 1940s. It was birthed at the cultural crossroads of Spanish Harlem and the 52nd Street jazz scene. An interesting dimension of ***Cubop's*** history is the language barrier between its co-creators: Dizzy Gillespie spoke no Spanish, and Chano Pozo spoke very little English, yet they composed legendary standards together purely through rhythm and musical intuition, proving that: "Music is the great uniter. He has studied music at CCM and UMKC conservatories of music. He has performed on stage with Bobby Watson, Joel Frahm, Eric Alexander, Steve Davis, Mike Wade, Bob Bowman, and more. Gunnar has a strong love for Swing, Be-Bop, and Hard-Bop music from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. He also plays a variety of music, all the way from Bossa Nova to Funk & Rock. 🔹He will be followed by Glad Rags & Giggle Water from 9p til midnight with jazz, blues & lounge favorites on our new, expanded stage inside the Onyx Lounge. 🔹🔹September 15th marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month and this week’s password at Whisperz Speakasy honors the revolutionary contribution this Afro-Cuban beat gave to jazz, blues, R&B, and almost any modern music genre: 🥁🥁the Clave Rhythm🥁🥁 ▶With its roots in Western Africa, the clave rhythm made its way to Cuba and eventually America, where it became a staple of salsa, rumba, mambo, chacha and eventually gave birth to CuBop in NYC in the 1940s. The clave rhythm influences many modern musical genres today. This vocally led jazz ensemble will take the stage from 8-11p for a night of unforgettable live music! Featuring vocalist Heather Robillard; director and guitarist, Michael Kotur; bassist, Connor Smith; and drummer, Bradley Cordonnier - this group always gets the crowd moving! Join us for a weekend full of amazing musicianship, delectable small plates, delicious handcrafted cocktails and mocktails, and an all around fabulous time! Be sure to arrive early, grab a fine handcrafted cocktail, a few small plates, and get settled in for a night you won't want to miss. The show starts at 8p and goes til approximately 11pm.
